IMPORTANT REQUEST FROM THE CITY OF HALSTEAD
Halstead Residents,
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced changes to drinking water regulations that require water suppliers (City of Halstead) to identify all materials used in the construction of the water system. The goal of these changes is to identify and remove all lead pipes in the drinking water system. The City must identify all plumbing materials used on both the City’s and the customer’s side of the water meter. This means we need your help!
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) requires the City to submit this information before October 16, 2024. If the required information cannot be gathered from the homeowner, KDHE may require the City to excavate private lines in order to identify them. That would be a time-consuming project for our Public Works Department and at great cost to the City and our water customers. Feel free to reach out to your normal plumbing company to see if they can assist with the identification of your home’s types of plumbing materials.
Please complete a survey for every property you own in Halstead that has plumbing connected to the city's water supply. If you are a tenant, please forward this form to the landlord/property owner. This form is also available at City Hall and on our website.
Return the survey to the City ASAP. You may place it in the night box, fax, email, or mail it.
The City of Halstead has already begun proactively working on identifying and replacing water mains and service lines that may contain lead as we have performed maintenance or repairs on the water system the past couple of years.
Due to the sheer amount of water services within the city however, the majority of the services have not been evaluated which is why we are asking for your help in identifying the materials on the customer's side of the meter and helping us provide such information to KDHE. Your timely response will help save the city both time and money.
The City of Halstead will begin making direct contact with property owners to provide this information if we do not hear back from you.
